Fitness & Health

The Kinesiology program at TMU is founded on two primary principles. First, we are created in God’s image, and second, we function according to his design. From that basis, this degree prepares students to be successful Christian leaders in careers ranging from physical education to allied health professions. Students gain practical experience by training with TMU athletes and taking hands-on courses in functional anatomy, corrective exercise, and assessment techniques. Each student participates in at least one internship before graduation, many of which have led to careers in allied health, coaching, firefighting, physical training, teaching, and more.

Graduate School Preparation

Our recent alumni have embarked on exciting journeys to over 29 graduate schools, including prestigious institutions like CSU, UCLA, and USC, as well as renowned universities such as Florida, Montana, and Wisconsin. They have also pursued advanced studies at specialized schools like Azusa Pacific, Loma Linda, and Liberty University. Their graduate programs span a diverse array of fields, from Physical and Occupational Therapy to Osteopathic Medicine, Exercise Science, Nursing, and Medical School.

Meet the Faculty

In kinesiology, we teach that God has not only created our bodies, but he is actively involved in sustaining and holding all things together in His creation (Col. 1; Heb. 1). As we study the design and function of the body, we see God’s handiwork in the intricate detail and the interdependence of the anatomical systems. Furthermore, we learn that since the Fall, the body is susceptible to illness, injury and disease. But even through these difficult processes we all experience, we see how the Lord has crafted the body with the capability of healing and restoration.

Essentials of Nutrition - KIN353

A study of the foundational elements of nutrition. This course will cover the anatomy and function of the gastrointestinal tract as well as the physiology behind the digestion, absorption and metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Additionally, this course will cover the function of vitamins, minerals and the application of nutrition to exercise.

Exercise Program Design - KIN396

A study of the theory and application of training principles used in designing periodized sport-specific strength and conditioning programs.

Advanced Orthopedic Assessment - KIN426

An advanced course in theory and practice in the prevention and care of athletic injuries. Emphasis will be placed on fundamental evaluation and assessment skills needed by an allied health professional working with active populations.

Motor Learning - KIN436

An advanced course in theory and practice in the prevention and care of athletic injuries. Emphasis will be placed on fundamental evaluation and assessment skills needed by an allied health professional working with active populations.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Display a comprehensive understanding and application of human anatomy as it pertains to functional movement.
  2. Understand dietary requirements, digestive processes, and consequences of nutritional insufficiency on health, wellness, and performance.
  3. Understand the quantitative and qualitative analysis of human movement, tools to obtain this information and application of knowledge to improve movement patterns.
  4. Identify and describe key physiological responses and associated adaptations that occur in the human body during sport and exercise.
  5. Demonstrate principles of prevention and care of injuries in active populations.
  6. Identify and integrate motor learning theories to skill acquisition, performance, and proficiency indices.
  7. Display critical thinking, through writing and verbal communication, in field-related knowledge while applying proper terminology, principles, and concepts.
  8. Identify and critically evaluate primary research and scholarly sources and demonstrate applications to realworld situations.
