At The Master’s University, The Kinesiology and Physical Education Department gives students a deeper understanding and appreciation for God’s most intimately designed creation — the human body. As a program within the School of Science, Mathematics, Technology and Health, it offers emphases in pre-physical therapy exercise, sport science, and teaching/coaching.
The department’s success is a testament to the faculty’s commitment to hands-on teaching and creation-based education while using the most innovative knowledge and technology available.
Students graduate ready to go onto the next step in their field. Over 92% of our graduates who have applied to graduate schools are accepted and many attend their top choice of graduate programs. Some of the graduate programs students have been accepted to include USC, UCLA, University of Washington, University of Pittsburgh, Washington University (St. Louis), and University of Wisconsin. Furthermore, students from our Kinesiology program have completed graduate degrees in physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, osteopathic medicine, and nursing.
At TMU the motto is “For Christ and scripture.” This is a critical distinctive that has been upheld since 1927 and is woven through each major at the school. In Kinesiology, this means our study of the human body is seen through the lens of Scripture.
We understand that the body is “fearfully and wonderfully made” and we teach that the structure of cells, muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, etc., point to God’s glory in creation (Ps 139:14).
Whether we are studying the complexity of an individual cell, the arthrokinematics of the ankle joint, or the adaptability of the cardiovascular system, all anatomy, physiology, and biomechanical functions reveal an infinitely wise Creator (Ps 95:6, 139:14; Is 45:9). As we study these structures in function, we see God as sustainer (Col 1:17; Heb 1:3).
The goal is that every student in the Kinesiology department will be thoroughly equipped with an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physical assessment, and rehabilitation science, but more importantly, prepared to engage broken and hurting people with God’s mercy. Another key component of the Kinesiology curriculum is the “problem” of pain and suffering (Is. 61:1-2; Matt. 14:14, Ps. 39:4,5). Because of the fall, our bodies are frail and susceptible to illness and injury. Though not well understood by mankind, we can see that pain and suffering is all part of God’s plan to draw His children to Himself. Essentially God, in His mercy, ordains us to experience physical suffering so that we might be humbled into seeing our true spiritual condition before God and enable us to love Him more (Is. 45:7, II Cor. 12:7-10, Ps. 119:71).
In the classroom, students are challenged to think critically by allied health professionals in lectures which are complemented with ample hands on learning opportunities. Almost every class in Kinesiology has a lab component that is structured with graduate schools in mind to prepare students with an understanding of anatomy and physiology well beyond textbooks. Outside the classroom, our students are required to engage in internships with a variety of allied health professionals to solidify their understanding of various career paths.
With a proper understanding of creation, we can fully understand the structure, function, and purpose of the human body. At The Master’s University, we are committed to the authority of Scripture as it guides our understanding of kinesiology.
