For the past three years, Crossway has been working with faculty members at The Master’s University on an unprecedented project — an audio Bible over 100 hours long that combines full cast and narration with an orchestral score that covers the entirety of the Scripture reading.
The project, “Symphony of Scripture,” released its rendition of the Gospel of John in September, with the complete audio Bible slated for release in fall of 2027.
The global premiere of “Symphony of Scripture” took place on Sept. 7 at the “Sing!” 2026 conference, featuring selected passages from the Gospel of John and Revelation accompanied by a live orchestra.
Grant Fonda, renowned composer and adjunct professor at TMU, created the orchestral score for the project, which spans more than 100 hours of music — involving a workload equivalent to composing 30 film scores. In addition to its grand scope, Fonda said that this endeavor also required a tremendous level of detail.
“It’s the Word of God, and so it should be the very best that we can possibly give,” he said. “And especially for believers, we should bring the best possible offering that we can think of before the Lord.”
For Fonda, this meant giving particular attention to the score’s musical themes. He composed over twenty distinct themes representing major throughlines in Scripture (such as Jesus, creation, and Satan), each carefully placed throughout the score to draw the listener into theological truths. His goal in this was to emphasize the interwoven connection of Old Testament to New Testament passages through music.
While Fonda shaped the project’s music, Prof. Matt Green, chair of TMU’s Cinema & Digital Arts program, directed the narration and audio production. Through the entire project, which involved work equivalent to directing over 80 feature films, he sought to “make sure that it all points back to Jesus, who’s the centerpiece of everything.”
The cast involved many voices, though none more prominent than the late Jubilant Sykes, who served as the audio Bible’s narrator. Green cherished the opportunity to work with him on the project, saying, “Jubilant was not only a wonderful actor, but a brilliant musician, with his thoughtfulness toward the cadence of what was happening on the score, and trying to make Scripture come to life through rhythm.”
Several alumni participated in the project, including Emma Most (’21) and Jack Anthony (’26), who worked alongside Fonda on the score. For TMU faculty and alumni alike, contributing to this audio Bible project was an opportunity to worship the Lord and display the living truth of Scripture.
“It’s one story of God’s plan of redemption, from creation through the end of history,” Green said. “We’ve been intentional about everything — from casting to music to where individual themes appear — to make sure that it ultimately points back to Jesus.”
