Hotchkiss Hall was the first dorm constructed when the university moved to its current location in the 1960’s. It was dedicated on April 30, 1965 to Dr. Herbert Hotchkiss, “No man ever deserved to be memorialized in connection with an educational institution more than Herbert Hotchkiss.”

Herbert Hotchkiss came to Los Angeles Baptist Seminary in fall of 1947 from Pennsylvania at the invitation of Dr. Milton Fish, the new Dean of the Seminary. The school had just started to broaden its courses into liberal arts degree work, but it was a time of great financial challenge for the school and the Board of Directors considered merging the school with another seminary or even closing the school over the summer of 1947. However, partially because of a letter from Hotchkiss, the board reconsidered and decided to move forward with another school year. Hotchkiss was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree at commencement ceremonies in 1952.

What is Hotchkiss Hall like?

Hotchkiss Dorm is a two-story building in the shape of an “H”. Between the two sides of rooms are a central lounge on the first story and two apartments for the Resident Directors on the second story. There are eight wings, four men’s and four women’s, divided by the lounge on the first floor and by the Resident Directors’ apartments on the second. The wings of 12 rooms are equipped with a large central shower and restroom area on each floor. Laundry facilities are on the first floor of the lounge. Each room is fully furnished for two students including beds, built-in shelving, drawers, closet space, and desks. And each room has an individual heater/air-conditioner unit. The wings are referred to as “Upper-Back,” “Lower-Back,” “Upper-Front,” and Lower-Front.”

Three words to describe Hotchkiss:

Family. Tradition. Heart.

Dorm Traditions:

Apple Pie Night: an evening when a small team from Hotchkiss makes roughly 60-70 pies and the whole dorm gets together to eat them with vanilla ice cream. They collect apples as a dorm for weeks leading up to it. Normally it’s held on Jess’s deck, but this year, they are moving it to “The Hotchyard.”

Hotchkiss Luau: the final dorm event at Dockweiler Beach, every April, where they play games, have a sand castle competition, grill, make s’mores, and crown the Hotchkiss King and Queen.

She lived in Hotchkiss as a student and is blessed and humbled to be back as its Resident Director. She has a passion for God’s Word and a desire to help others apply it to their lives, especially those who are going through trials.
