Last semester, an alum from The Master’s University launched a new Bible app for iOS and Android, putting his computer science major into practice.
The Berean Bible App was created by Luke Cordeiro (’25), a graduate from TMU’s computer science department who desired to improve the experience of reading the Bible on a smartphone.
“The main goal of the app is ease of use,” Cordeiro said. “That manifests both in the unique features it has and in the way it makes standard Bible app features faster or easier.”
One of these unique features includes a history button, which displays the last nine verses the user read, allowing for faster navigation between passages. The app also includes a semantic search, which uses artificial intelligence to analyze the user’s search and match the most relevant verses. Unlike other apps, the semantic search works offline and does not require exact word matches to find a related verse.
In April, Cordeiro finished the Android version of the app and released it on the Google Play Store. He also obtained permission from 316 Publishing to include the Legacy Standard Bible in the available translations.
Cordeiro explained how TMU helped him feel better qualified to take on this ambitious project.
“When I started out, I initially felt underprepared, because I had a lot of theory from my computer science classes but not as much practice,” he said. “However, looking back, the practice comes easily once you have the theory — and, having the broad knowledge of computer science and AI from TMU helped me not only learn quickly, but also think about deeper questions that don’t just involve code and functions.”
More than that, Cordeiro said his time at TMU helped him understand what his life is really for.
“The Lord saved me over the summer between my first and second years at TMU, and coming back as a new believer was so incredible,” said Cordeiro. “The Lord used TMU to grow me in so many ways, to encourage me when I was struggling, and to teach me about Himself. Without the Lord’s work I’d just be pursuing money and fame.”
