We know transitioning from high school to college presents a significant adjustment for students, where familiar benchmarks and achievements may no longer apply. Students, once accustomed to earning A’s and B’s in high school, sometimes find themselves struggling. Maybe a B-plus was their highest grade, but now they receive C’s. This shift highlights the reality that college courses often demand more, with higher grades reserved for exceptional work beyond the basic requirements. Students may encounter challenges like different teaching styles or courses that exceed their preparedness level. As parents, it’s important to embrace this adjustment period. Assure your student that support services are available to help them succeed academically.
The services highlighted in this article are designed to offer personalized support so that every student has access to the necessary resources to excel during their time at The Master’s University.
Tutoring at TMU is a critical academic support system, offering one-on-one and group tutoring sessions that cater to students’ diverse needs. The tutoring services are available across various subjects, including those that fall within mathematics, the sciences and the humanities. What sets TMU’s tutoring apart is the personalized approach: tutors not only help with understanding specific course material but also teach study skills, time management, and test preparation strategies that are crucial for long-term academic success. These services are offered in both in-person and online formats, making them accessible to all students regardless of their schedule or learning style.
The tutors are often upperclassmen or graduate students who have excelled in the courses they tutor. This peer-to-peer model fosters a collaborative learning environment where students feel comfortable seeking help from their peers.

TMU’s academic counseling services play a vital role in guiding students through their educational journey. The counselors work closely with students to create personalized academic plans that align with their goals and aspirations. This service goes beyond simple course selection; it involves a holistic approach to the student’s academic life, including goal setting, time management, and balancing academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities.
Counselors are trained to recognize and address a range of academic challenges that students might face, from adjusting to the rigor of college-level work to managing stress and anxiety related to academic performance. They also provide guidance for students considering changes in their academic path, such as switching majors or exploring new academic interests, while ensuring, most importantly, that students stay on track for graduation.

The ODS at TMU is dedicated to ensuring that students with documented medical, physical, or learning disabilities have equal access to an education. The university complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provides a range of accommodations tailored to the individual student’s need to mitigate academic hindrance. The office provides a confidential and comfortable atmosphere to request services, meet with service providers, and implement academic accommodations in a minimally invasive manner to minimize stress. Students meet with program director Kara Antariksa to discuss and address course barriers and establish a plan that will promote a setting for improved academic learning.
Students seeking ODS support must reach out and provide the office with a signed, completed Student Intake Form that registers their intent to qualify for services. Current and appropriate medical documentation or testing is also required for the office to identify an academic need and justify placement of accommodation to remove the academic barrier(s). The Disability Office also develops individualized action plans to develop students’ understanding of their role and responsibility in the educational process for an optimal learning outcome. It is an interactive approach that partners students, ODS, faculty, and staff.
The ODS’s goal is to aid students in developing effective communication, self-advocacy, and critical thinking skills. This helps them grow in confidence of who they are as Christ-bearers, which can lead them to secure opportunities to show how their faith and testimony can impact the community and world around them.
