Security Matters to TMU

At The Master’s University (TMU), the security and safety of our students, staff, and faculty is of the highest priority. The Department of Campus Safety staffs its officers around the clock, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are always ready to respond to any incident.

What We Do to Keep Your Student Safe

Our staff consists of several different types of officers. We have full-time armed staff, part-time armed staff, full-time unarmed staff, student community service officers, and a volunteer student EMT crew. Each officer is put through extensive training and qualification (about 180 hours) when they begin service with us. They also maintain professional state-certified licensing for the equipment and tools they use daily. They remain on a “training cycle” until they have completed all the requirements to be on patrol as a standard Campus Safety Officer. Some of the areas that we are responsible for include:

• Locking and unlocking the campus each morning and evening
• Patrolling the campus 24/7
• Monitoring and responding to building alarms across campus
• Providing traffic control services for major events and busy class periods
• Responding to calls for service (suspicious persons, medical calls, emergency incidents such as fires or power outages)
• Maintaining control of the parking lots on campus to ensure safety
• Monitoring video surveillance feeds on a consistent basis
• Preparing and training for disaster situations 

How You Can Support Campus Safety Efforts

Even though we are dedicated and committed to our role as the chief responsible safety agent, a partnership with parents can be an important and valuable tool for maintaining a safe campus. Here are a few things you can do.

1. Encourage Your Student to Stay Alert and Informed
   As much as we invest in security systems and personnel, students play a crucial role in their safety. Their partnership with Campus Safety is critical to maintaining a safe campus. If a student feels unsafe at night we suggest that they contact a friend via cell phone and talk while they walk, or get a ride from a friend or fellow student. If they need an escort, Campus Safety is happy to provide that if they just give us a call. 661-362-2548
2. Keep Open Channels of Communication
   Although we look to help your students grow into responsible young adults, parents can still play an important role by checking in regularly to ask about their well-being. Offer a listening ear and encourage them to seek support and report any suspicious activity they encounter to their RA or RD, no matter how minor it seems. When they hear or see something, tell them to say something. Whether it’s a minor concern or a more significant issue, we treat every report seriously.
3. Advocate for Continued Improvement
   As an invested parent, you have a voice in our community. If you are concerned about campus safety, don’t hesitate to reach out. Advocating through the proper channels, like this office (), for awareness of and continued improvements to campus safety protocols ensures that we constantly evolve to meet new challenges.
4. Familiarize Yourself with University Safety Resources
   It’s helpful for parents to know the safety resources available on campus. Take time to familiarize yourself with the contact information for campus security, health, and emergency services. This knowledge will enable you to provide immediate guidance to your student in the event of an emergency.

Our Campus Safety Strategy

Campus safety encompasses far more than just security personnel and surveillance cameras. While these are crucial components, effective security involves a layered approach that includes technology, physical safety measures, and community involvement. The motto of the Department of Campus Safety comes from Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchmen stay awake in vain.” My team is committed to compassionate servant leadership as an example to all that we have contact with on campus.

Our core values are:

• Compassion: Jesus said, love God first and love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:36-40). Our prayer is that God would give us love to serve our students.
• Servanthood: Jesus said, the greatest among you must be your servant (Matthew 23:11-12).  Our prayer is that God would give us humility in serving our students.
• Protection: Jesus said, greater love has no one than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (John 15:13). We pray that God gives us courage to protect our students.

As parents, your concern for your student’s safety is both understandable and shared by us. At The Master’s University, we are committed to providing a secure environment where students can be and feel safe.
