Ben Blakey (’09) shares advice on how to choose a local church.
Ben Blakey and his wife, Holly, have five children: Hannah (12), Mac (9), Jones (7), Watson (4), and Brooks (2).
Ben Blakey graduated from what was then The Master’s College in 2009 with a degree in political studies, and he currently serves as the lead pastor of Compass Bible Church Treasure Valley in Boise, Idaho. We recently asked him to share advice on how to choose a local church.
As you make life and career choices, the local church should never be an afterthought — it should be a leading consideration for you and your family. God’s plan for your Christian life revolves around the local church.
You can start with the church’s doctrinal statement, but I’d also recommend listening to several sermons from the church. Identify pastors who are faithful expositors, explaining what the text means and how it rightly applies to life.
In God’s instruction to the church, leadership begins with godly character. God calls you to submit to your leaders and imitate their faith, so search for pastors who can say with integrity, “Follow me as I follow Christ!”
You will never find a perfect local church, but seek a congregation where you see marks of true godliness, like humility, patience, and forgiveness, as the body builds itself up in love.
Don’t just be a consumer and think about what the church can do for you. Be eager to roll up your sleeves and do whatever is needed to help your church reach, teach, and train your community for the glory of Christ!
