This fall, two engineering students — Zef Dickerson and Oliver McLeod — received their Certified Solidworks Associate (CSWA) certifications early, setting a new record for The Master’s University.

This is the third year Dan Dubei, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, has taught CAD & Solidworks, a course designed to prepare students with the software information required to take the certification at the end of the semester.

However, Dickerson and McLeod decided to speed through the customary process: “The semester was still going on, but they were so ahead that they covered everything for the exam and were able to take it and pass,” Dubei said.

The students received the certification six weeks into the semester — the fastest time of anyone else in the program since it started.

CSWA is widely recognized and required in the industry. Many companies utilize the software covered in the course, which makes the certification essential to secure a mechanical engineering job. It is also a guarantee that the students have mastered the topics and is the best way to validate their skills and knowledge, which is why passing the exam is the only way to pass the class.

Dubei said they’ve had several students who were able to find internships primarily because of the materials learned through this class and by receiving the certification.

The next step is to complete the Certified Solidworks Professional (CSWP), which Dickerson, not surprisingly, has also already achieved.
