Joseph Jackson is 39 years old and resides in Long Beach Ca. with his wife Sheveeta and 5-year-old son Jacob (and another baby boy on the way). Joseph holds a BA degree from the University of Southern Ca. and a MM degree from Azusa Pacific University and has played tuba for about 25 years.
He has studied with Tommy Johnson, Doug Tornquist, Jim Self, Roger Bobo, Pat Sheridan and John Van Houten. Joseph is principle tubist with the Rio Hondo and Desert Symphonies and has performed with Pasadena Symphony, New West Symphony, Conejo Valley Symphony, Marina Del Rey Symphony, Redlands Symphony, The Long Beach Ballet and La Primavera Orchestra. Joseph has been soloist with the Carson and New Valley Symphonies on multiple occasions and has had solo performances with the Golden State British Brass Band. Joseph has been a soloist at The Southwest Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference (SWRTEC) on 3 occasions and most recently conducted a Master Class session there called “Musical Approach to Etudes.” Joseph is active as a freelance and studio musician playing on recordings and soundtracks. He has recorded with Terence Blanchard, The GKM Jazz Orchestra, The Hollywood 12, and DeadMau5.
While busy performing, Joseph is also busy as a teacher and clinician. He is professor of tuba at Citrus and The Master’s University. Joseph is the Low Brass Specialist with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA at HOLA) where he leads sectionals with all brass instruments, teaches private instruction, occasionally conducts the Symphonic Winds and coaches the Brass Chamber Ensemble, “Yo Brass.” Joseph founded the Citrus Six Tuba Ensemble and has commissioned new music for this ensemble; in addition, he has commissioned 4 other solo/chamber works for the tuba and plans to have many more commissions done.
An avid lover of trains since he was a kid, Joseph builds and operates models and he spent 14 years on the Disneyland Railroad as an engineer. Another work Joseph is involved in is ministry at Crenshaw Church of Christ where he serves as a music minister and deacon there.
