Assisant Professor of Music
Director of Instrumental Studies
Dr. Gwang Kim serves as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Studies
at The Master’s University, where he conducts the University Orchestra and Wind
Ensemble and teaches courses in aural skills and notation. He is an active performer and
currently holds the position of second trombone with the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra.
He has performed with major ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic,
Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, New West Symphony, Seocho Philharmonic, and Daesan
Philharmonic. His diverse career has included performances at Coachella with artists from
88 Rising and studio recordings for television shows such as The Fosters (ABC) and Chef’s
Table (Netflix).
As an experienced educator, Dr. Kim has previously served on faculties of California State
University Fresno; Concordia University Irvine; Loyola Marymount University; Ventura
College; and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s YOLA program. He has been invited as a
guest clinician at institutions including Pasadena City College, California State University
Northridge, and the Rockport Brass Festival.
Dr. Kim’s research interests lie at the intersection of music, theology, and aesthetics. His
doctoral dissertation, Coram Deo: The Trombone and the Sublime in the Works of
Beethoven, explores how Beethoven’s use of the trombones evokes themes of divine
majesty and awe, drawing on historical associations with the sacred and the transcendent
in Western musical thought. He is also actively involved with the International Trombone
Association, having participated in the annual International Trombone Festival as a
conductor, performer, presenter, and adjudicator.
Dr. Kim is happily married to his wife, who is also Dr. Kim.
