Q&A with Monte Brooks

If it’s been a while since you’ve seen Monte Brooks, you’ll be glad to know the legendary TMU baseball coach has maintained his love for Christ, his passion for seeing his players realize their full potential, and his keen sense of humor.

This season will be Brooks’ 30th as manager of the Mustangs, and as you’ll see in our brief Q&A, very little about him has changed over the decades — in the very best way possible.

Q: What comes to mind when you hear this will be your 30th year?

Gratitude. Absolute gratitude. The opportunity to be at a school that bears our Lord’s name and to be associated with young men and their growth in Christ and development as players is an unbelievable blessing.

Q: What do you enjoy most about coaching at TMU?

The relationships with the players and coaches. The fellowship and opportunity to share Scripture with them is such a privilege. It’s iron sharpening iron. And it’s been such a joy to see players get baptized and become members at their churches. I also have to mention our trips to the World Series — those are trophies of grace to our players from the Lord.

Q: What excites you most about the 2026 team?

We’re balanced. These guys are skilled, and there’s maturity, experience, and teachability. Our incoming class of players has the opportunity to sit under some really mature, faithful, godly examples who are also talented athletically. It’s a great mix.

Q: What’s something you’ve learned in three decades as head coach?

You have to keep learning. The game has transitioned quite a bit. It’s a different landscape. So with technology and things like that, you have to keep up. It’s helped that the Lord has provided me with a long list of great mentors whose guidance I’ve been able to sit under as I develop my own methodology.

Q: What role has your wife played in your career?

I would not have been able to do it without Carole Anne. She’s a God-fearing woman who loves me, but loves Christ more. She’s obviously sacrificed a lot of time because of the nature of the sport. But her love for the Lord and constant reinforcement and encouragement of going to the Scripture and challenging me has been invaluable.

Q: What do you hope is true of the players who come out of your program?

I want them to be Christ-like and pursue membership in their church. They’re the next generation of the church. I want them to be godly men who are going to be steadfast, faithful, bold, and champions of Christ. I want this place to be a great experience for them — a place where they improve as players and grow in their faith in Christ.

Q: Do you have another 30 years of coaching left in you?
