Take a few minutes and familiarize yourself with the particulars of our library.
The Robert L. Powell Library exists to support the academic and scholarly programs of The Master's College and to serve primarily its faculty, staff and currently enrolled students. TMC Alumni, The Master's Seminary (TMS) and other visitors are welcome to use this library but must bear in mind that our first priority is to the TMC community.
Every patron of the TMC library is accountable for abiding by all applicable policies, procedures and copyright laws.
A completed Patron Registration form will need to be submitted to the Circulation Manager before an ID card can be made. The Master's College ID card must be presented to circulation desk personnel whenever materials are checked out. All new students, faculty and staff will be given one card at no charge. However, there is a $5 fee to replace lost or broken cards. ID cards that have been worn to the point that the photo, barcode and/or magnetic strip are no longer viable may be replaced without the fee. Appointments for making replacement ID cards should be made with the Circulation Manager or the College Librarian.
TMS students may use their seminary ID cards to check out materials at The Master's College. Refer to Reciprocal Arrangements page on this Web site for details on TMC/TMS borrowing privileges.
Visitors desiring to check out circulating materials may apply for a resident library card. See "VISITORS" below for details.
Decorum appropriate to the mission and ministry of The Master's College must be maintained. We are intent on making our facility conducive to research and study therefore, please refrain from talking in the library especially while on the second floor. If you are seeking help, use your quiet, inside voice.
Also, any verbal abuse, argumentative behavior, or failure to respond to directives of a member of the library staff is treated as a very serious matter. The staff will ask those who cause such problems to leave the facility and will call campus security as needed to enforce this directive. All such incidents are reviewed by the College Librarian and Circulation Manager and patrons, regardless of status, may have his/her library privileges revoked for such a violation.
Food is not permitted in the library however, beverages are allowed as long as they are in spill resistant containers.
Please consider your fellow students more important than yourself and TURN OFF or at least set to vibrate your cell phone. When a call is received, please remove yourself from the library to carry on the conversation outside.
Do not deface books by marking, underlining, notating, or bending pages. Avoid leaving books, audio-visual materials or other library resources in vehicles as this will result in heat damage. The cost of replacing damaged materials is the responsibility of the patron to whom the materials have been loaned. See Lending Policies for details.
In order for an open-stack system to work smoothly and effectively each user must abide by the basic rules. Each person must be individually responsible to see that all library materials taken from the library are checked out properly.
While all are welcome to use materials in the library, only The Master's College and Seminary students, faculty, staff and those who have obtained a resident library card may check out materials. Select the "Visitors" menu option for application information. All others are permitted to use the library, however, they are not permitted to check out materials or use interlibrary loan privileges.
The following items are part of the main circulating collection and may be checked out when a valid Master's College ID card is presented to a circulation clerk:
All circulating items may be checked out for three weeks. All materials are due before closing on the date due. See Fines and Fees below for details on overdue charges. Items with multiple pieces (such as DVDs or CDs) must have all pieces together when returned. If a piece is missing, the item cannot be checked in until all pieces are returned.
The library reserves the right to limit the number of items per subject each patron is permitted to check out as demand warrants. EXCEPTION: Resident card holders may only check out five items at a time and TMS patrons may only check out 12 items at a time. The library also reserves the right to deny a patron circulation privileges if s/he has developed a history of sustained abuse to library policy.
The following items may not be checked out:
1. Overdue main circulating materials: $0.25 per item, per day the library is open for the first four weeks, after which, the fine increases to $0.50 per day per item for the next four weeks.
2. Overdue reserve materials: $1.00 per item, per hour.
3. Overdue interlibrary loan material: $1.00 per item, per day.
4. Items will be considered lost after the first three weeks of being overdue. Lost charges will apply in addition to the overdue fines.
5. Lost materials minimum replacement fee is $50 per item plus a $10 processing fee. Replacement fees are the minimum charge applied. If actual replacement fees exceed these charges the difference will be applied as well.
5. In lieu of paying the $50 fee for a lost item, the patron may buy and give to the library the exact item. Accumulated overdue fines and the $10 processing fee will still apply.
6. If a lost item is found and returned to the library undamaged, the $50 lost item and $10 processing fines will be refunded.
6. Damaged item fee is $25 per item.
6. Overdue materials may not be renewed.
7. If you have unpaid fines for over eight weeks, your fines are subject to be charged to your TMC student account with an additional $10.00 nonrefundable processing fee added. If you are a student of TMS and have unpaid lost item replacement fees over eight weeks, your fines are subject to be charged to your TMS account. Please take note of this and pay your fines before any other fees are added.

A STOP on an account prohibits the patron from checking out any more materials until the fine is paid or the overdue items are returned.
A STOP will be placed on a patron's account, if a patron's fines and fees reach $40 or, if a patron exceeds his/her respective overdue limit.
Patron Overdue Items Limit:
1. TMC faculty, staff, undergraduate students and DCP students may have up to six overdue items before a STOP is placed on their account
2. Online students, Graduate students and Seminary students may have up to four overdue items before a STOP is placed on their account.
3. Alumni may have three and SCV resident card holders may have two overdue items before a STOP is placed on their account.
Regular Reserves may be checked for three hours and may be used in the library or taken out of the library. The three hour time limit only applies to the time the library is open. This means these materials may be checked out one to two hours before closing and must be returned within two to one hours respectively the next day (equal to three open hours). ID cards will be held at the circulation desk until reserved items are returned. However, ID cards are not held when reserve materials are checked out overnight. The late fine on reserve materials is $1.00 per hour, or any part of an hour, per item.
"STRICT" Reserves may not be taken out of the library at all; not even overnight.
The patron's ID will be held until the "STRICT" reserve item is returned.
All materials (except Reserve items and Interlibrary Loans) may be renewed twice unless requested by another patron. See information about "Placing a Hold" on an item below. After the maximum number of renewals is reached the material(s) must be returned for use by others.
Renewals may be made in several ways:
1. Go to www.masters.edu
2. Select "Resources" > "Library"
3. Select "Search Discovery Advanced"
4. Select "Library Links" > "My Account"
5. Enter your username [student id number] and password [your choice]
6. Check the items you want to renew. Be sure to make a note of the new due date. If no new date is given, then your items were unable to be renewed. Please contact the Circulation Manager to see if it is possible for the items to be renewed.
7. Online renewals must be made at least 24 hours before the due date. Also, overdue materials cannot be renewed. They must be brought back to the library.
8. The new due date is calculated from the date the renewal is made not from the original due date.

Placing a "hold" on an item allows patrons to put themselves on a waiting list for the item as soon as it is returned. A hold can only be placed on an item that is already checked out. When the item has been returned the patron who has placed the hold will be notified. The patron then has one week to pick up the item before it is reshelved. Items with a hold placed on them cannot be renewed.
To place a hold select the "Request" tab found with the record of the item wanted.
Desktop Computers are located throughout the main floor of the library. There is one computer dedicated for library catalog use only and it is labeled accordingly. The rest of the computers provide access to the library catalog, MasterNet, the Internet, the library's online subscription databases and indexes as well as other programs made possible by the Computer Services dept. including word-processing. There are also some computers with special programs intended for specific courses. Students enrolled in the courses needing those programs have priority use of these computers.
In addition to the hardwired computers available to all patrons, the library is fitted with wirless connection to the MasterNet network. Wireless access cannot be provided to everyone due to licensing, security and administrative restrictions. Therefore, only currently enrolled TMC traditional students, DCP, Credential, & MABC students and TMS students may purchase wireless network access. TMC and TMS alumni, resident card holders and visitors are not eligible for wireless network access. TMS staff and faculty may petition the Computer Services Dept. where the need will be determined on a case by case basis.
DVD players are available for use in the library. Data Projectors are availalbe for faculty and staff. All audio-video equipment must remain in the library at all times unless required for classroom use and reserved in advance. Reservations for data projectors may be made only by TMC faculty or staff for campus related activities. There is no pick up and delivery service available. Contact the circulation desk for further details on policy and procedure. In keeping with copyright law (Title 17 of the United States Code,), data projectors may not be used by anyone on campus except by faculty for in class related activities.
This applies to currently enrolled students, faculty and staff of TMC and the reciprocating institution. Reciprocal arrangements do not apply to any other TMC library cardholders.
The individual borrower is subject to the rules and regulations established by the lending library, including, but not limited to, those rules that govern access to and the availability of library materials, loan periods, renewals, recall, and delinquency and lost materials charges. TMC patrons are expected to make themselves aware of the policies and regulations of each library used. The borrower is expected to protect materials and return them directly to the lending library by the due date. Charges for late, lost or damaged materials are the responsibility of the borrower. Fines, fees and replacement costs for library materials will be determined by the lending libraries in accordance with their existing policies.
The Master's Seminary and The Master's College Libraries have a reciprocal agreement, which makes the collective resources available to both student bodies and faculty. TMC/TMS patrons needing resources from the college/seminary may obtain them from the respective library's circulation departments, filling out a patron registration form and presenting his/her student ID. TMS patrons may only check out 15 items at one time. Exceptions may be granted by either the Librarian or Circulation Manager.
Biola University and The Master's College have established mutual borrowing privileges with currently enrolled students, faculty and staff. Both libraries will provide direct loan service to eligible and properly identified members of each other's campus community for unrestricted and available materials upon presentation of proper identification, the completion of the library card registration form and the issuance of a library card. The library cards are subject to renewal each semester or term.
The Oviatt Library at California State University Northridge (CSUN) is available to residents, like TMC students for an annual fee of $50.00. This service is provided through the Friends of the Library, an auxiliary support organization of CSUN library. Students utilizing this service receive a patron card that allows normal lending privileges, however it excludes access to the CSUN network with their corresponding databases. Coin operated temporary parking permits are available in designated lots only.
Books new to the library are on the display book case in the Main Collection room on the first floor. These materials will remain on the display shelves for about two weeks or until someone checks them out, whichever comes first.
The book sale shelf is open for business during regular library hours. Prices are posted. Special sales are planned periodically throughout the course of the school year. Dates and times will be posted.
Please DO NOT re-shelve any item used. Instead, return all materials to a book cart or leave them on a table or in a study carrel. The library staff will re-shelve all materials after collecting the needed usage statistics.
During library operating hours, returned items should be left on the Circulation Desk or placed in the book drop inside the library except for RESERVE items. To avoid unwanted overdue charges DO NOT RETURN RESERVE ITEMS TO THE BOOK DROP. An after-hours book drop is located just outside the main entrance of the library and is to be used only when the library is closed. It is OK to place audio-visual materials in the book drop. Items placed in the outside book drop will be counted as having been returned the day the library was last open.
The Circulation Manager reserves the right to recall an item that is needed for the support of the current curriculum. If such a request is made, please return the item immediately. Failure to return recalled items within three days will incur a fine of $1.00 per day for a maximum of five days.
Study carrel reservations are limited to TMC students only. Reservations will be made for designated study carrels on the second floor and are limited to a period of one week. However, the student may request an extension from the Circulation Manager. Each extension will be considered on a week to week basis.
The student must also abide by these policies:
1. All library materials kept in a reserved carrel must be checked out to the student who is reserving the carrel.
2. Reference materials and Periodicals may be used, but not stored at the study carrel. Please place these items on their proper carts after each use.
3. The carrel must be kept neat and clean. Personal items are permitted but may not cause an unsightly clutter. The library is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged personal items.
4. Food is not allowed however, drinks are allowed as long as they are in a closed lid container.
5. Library resources and personal items must be removed at the termination of the reservation period.
Due to closing procedures, please have all necessary circulation services completed 15 minutes before closing time (e.g. check out books, return reserved items, return headphones, pay copy charges, etc.).
In addition to the main entrance, there are two emergency exits located on the first floor of the library; one on the east side of the building by the periodical collection and one in the west wing along the connecting wall. Additionally, there is an emergency exit at the rear of the second floor. Please make note of these exits as well as the location of fire extinguishers and plan your exit strategy beforehand. Also, keep in mind that these exits are for emergency use only and an alarm will sound when they are opened.
In the event a fire alarm sounds all patrons are to proceed immediately to the nearest exit; DO NOT attempt to gather personal items. Patrons must obey all directions of the library staff and leave the building immediately. A speedy exit from the building is essential for personal safety and to keep the area clear for responding emergency personnel.
The library is not responsible for the safety or security of personal items left unattended in the library (e.g. laptops, cell phones, books, purses, sunglasses, keys, etc.). Personal items found by the library staff will be placed in the "Lost and Found" shelf behind the circulation desk. There they will remain until claimed or the end of the semester. The library staff is not responsible for verifying ownership of lost and found items. Unclaimed items will be discarded at the end of each semester.
All are welcome to use The Master's College Robert L. Powell Library and its resources in house provided decorum appropriate to the mission and ministry of The Master's College Library are maintained (see LIBRARY DEMEANOR above).
Guest login for using the computers to access the Internet, email or other programs available on the network is available by asking at the circulation desk or the reference desk.
Residents of the City of Santa Clarita desiring to check out circulating materials may apply for a resident library card.* Application requirements:
Visitors and resident card holders will be held accountable for abiding by the same policies, procedures and copyright laws as those of The Master's College community. Details of these policies, procedures and services are available at this Web site under the menu options "Library Services" and "About the Library" as well as "LibGuides". Special circulation restrictions apply to resident card holders. Those who are unable to meet these requirements will have the privilege of using this library revoked and if called for, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
