El Cajon, Calif. – After three sets, the Lady Mustangs concluded their regular season at 26-5 and 10-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. With first-round playoff implications on the line, Coach Bobby Blanken and his squad couldn’t afford to look past the San Diego Christian Hawks (5-19, 3-11 GSAC).
The Mustangs won by scores of 25-17, 25-9, and 25-16.
The Hawks opened up play by leading the Mustangs for the better part of the first set until TMC tied the match at 12-12. From there, the Mustangs went on a 4-0 run, extending their advantage to 16-12. Using multiple kills by Sam Dougherty (Madera, CA), Tori Callihan (Simi Valley, CA), and Stacey Jones (Scottsdale, AZ), and a collection of Hawk errors, the Mustangs battled their way to a 25-17, first-set victory.
The third set was controlled by the Mustangs. TMC never allowed the Hawks a chance to make a run in the deciding set with a final score of 25-16 to finish off the sweep. Statistically, the Mustangs were propelled by 17 kills and a .400 hitting percentage.
Dougherty led TMC with 14 kills, eight digs, and a .464 hitting percentage. Ashley Newton (Henderson, NV) had nine kills, one error, and a .727 hitting percentage. Callihan also had nine kills and threw in two blocks, respectively. Rebecca Peluffo (La Crescenta, CA) led the Mustangs with 17 digs.
The Lady Mustangs now wait to hear who, or even if, they will compete against in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament oon November 17. Playoff information will be released Sunday afternoon.
