Fullerton, Calif. – Women’s volleyball swept the Royals of Hope International (3-16, 1-8 GSAC) Tuesday night in three sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-21), improving their overall record to 21-4 and 6-3 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Sam Dougherty (Madera, CA) led TMC with 18 kills, nine digs, two block assists, and a .438 hitting percentage. Britney Jones (Northridge, CA) had eight kills, six digs, three blocks assists, and a .429 hitting percentage. Tori Callihan (Simi Valley, CA) and Rachel Taylor (Sun Valley, CA) both chipped in six kills apiece. Rebecca Peluffo (La Crescenta, CA) led the Mustangs with 19 digs.
The Royal beating began as HIU started off with a 2-0 lead. However, the Mustangs quickly closed the gap and never let the Royals regain the lead. In fact, the Mustangs' largest lead in the first set was a nine-point difference as TMC held a 19-10 advantage. The Lady Mustangs capitalized off a string of offensive miscues on the part of Hope, bringing the first set to 25-17.
Set two concluded in favor of the Mustangs, 25-16. The match remained close and even saw the Royals take the lead at 7-6. However, TMC regained the lead shortly after with the help of six collective kills by Dougherty. Set two also featured an evening-high 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .538.
TMC made quick work of HIU in the third set and concluded the evening with a 25-21 victory. As a team, the Mustangs outplayed the Royals 43-29 in kills and held the opposition to a collective hitting percentage of .084.
With six left games on the schedule, TMC looks to continue its most successful campaign in over a decade. For the second time this season, the Lady Mustangs will face No. 21 Vanguard (15-12, 5-4 GSAC) on Saturday night at 7:00 in Bross Gym.
