The Master's College women's soccer team fell 1-0 in a very physical game to the No. 9 ranked Cal State San Marcos Cougars on Saturday before a full crowd at Reese Field.
The loss drops the Lady Mustangs to 6-3 on the year as San Marcos goes to 7-1-1.
Both teams fought to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Lady Mustangs were particularly effective defensively in the half, limiting the Cougars to one shot on goal. TMC out-shot San Marcos 8-1 in the opening half.
The physical play picked up right where it left off as the second half began. Although it was a physical match, there were only a total of 12 fouls during the game.
The tide began to turn in the second half however when the Cougars had three consecutive corner kicks in the 56th minute. The Lady Mustangs ably defended their goal then, but a minute later San Marcos' Sara Hara found the net from 15 yards away, giving the visitor's a 1-0 lead.
TMC had a few opportunities to score in the second half but never managed to capitalize.
Kaycee Gunion posted a shutout with four saves for the Cougars as Ilyssa Espiritu gave up the only goal of the game and had five saves.
Coach Lewis's squad returns to action Saturday, October 1st at Vanguard in their GSAC opener.
