SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Lady Mustangs' 2012 season kicked off with excellence as The Master’s College women’s soccer team shut out visiting and No. 16 Trinity Christian 2-0 Saturday afternoon on Reese Field.
The Mustangs controlled the game from the kickoff with constant pressure in the Trolls' half of the field and opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a goal by senior midfielder Danielle Hollinger (Agua Dulce, CA) off an assist from sophomore midfielder Shea Richards (Palmdale, CA).
The second half saw consistent offensive play as the Mustangs continued to keep the ball in the Trinity Christian end of the field and tacked on their second and final goal in the 29th minute, scored by Shea Richards with an assist from freshman standout Kylee Macarthur (Santa Clarita, CA).
Not to be overshadowed by the Mustangs' impeccable offense, TMC’s defensive unit kept the opposition at bay as the Trolls were held to zero shots .
“It was a great first half and a rough second half which made it hard to put a full 90 minutes together, but we got the job done” stated Mustang head coach Curtis Lewis on the season-opening victory. “It was a great win against the 16th-ranked team in the nation. Trinity came out in the second half and played much better, but unfortunately we took our ‘foot off the gas.’ We recognize that we are going to have to work on that this season if we expect to play a full 90-minute game.”
The Mustangs will need to refine their full-game intensity as they prepare for their next match against No. 2 Concordia (Ore.) at the Southern Oregon University Classic in Ashland, Oregon. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 23.
