ASHLAND, Ore. –Saturday’s match against the Southern Oregon Raiders ended in a 2-2 draw as Coach Curtis Lewis and his Lady Mustangs avoided their second consecutive loss and left the Southern Oregon University Classic with a 1-1-1 season record.
TMC drew first blood early at the 4:34 mark when Shea Richards scored off a Janelle Sullivan assist, putting the Mustangs up 1-0. SOU answered back at 29:24 on an unassisted Stephanie Carr goal, and evened the field at 1-1.
Early in the second half, the Raiders notched their second and final goal at the 46:48 mark when Danielle Stave put a shot by Mustang goalie Ilyssa Espiritu. Espiritu was stingy the rest of the way and notched four saves in the process.
TMC answered back 34 minutes later at 80:15 with another shot off the foot of Shea Richards. Danielle Hollinger assisted with goal that tied the match at 2-2.
After two overtimes, both teams defense shined as the match came down to a decisive 2-2 draw. Although the Raiders recorded more shots on goal (9-2), the Mustangs actually had more total shots (19-16) but couldn't capitalize until Richard’s late-game heroics.
The Lady Mustangs will have little time to prepare for their next match as they take to the pitch against no. 13 CSU San Marcos on Wednesday, August 29th. Match time is scheduled for 5:00 pm in Oceanside.
