Clawed By The Eagles
October 8, 2013
Irvine, CA -- Zach Klindworth did everything he could to help The Master's College snap its two-game losing skid, however, even his efforts couldn't offset a strong first half by Concordia as the Mustangs fell to the Eagles 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.
The loss was the Mustangs' third in a row and dropped them to 0-3 in the GSAC and 1-7-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Eagles maintained their hold on first place in the conference, improving to 3-0 and 6-3 overall.
Klindworth (Valencia, CA) scored a goal in each half, unfortunately, both came after the Eagles had established a 3-0 lead, denting the scoreboard a trio of times in the match's first 26 minutes.
Asher Axe tallied the Eagles' first goal 14:39 into play when he slammed one from 50 yards out over Christian Bryant (Plymouth, MI), beating the Mustang goalie to the upper shelf of the net off a pass from Isaac Gettis.
The Eagles didn't let up either, putting three more shots on goal over the next nine minutes before Gettis made it a 2-0 game at the 24:10 mark, taking a Mario Soto cross and putting it between the pipes from the right side.
Continuing their assault on the Mustang net, the Eagles struck again just over a minute later (25:37) when Rayane Bouarroudj took a rebound off a Mario Soto shot and sent it by Bryant for a 3-0 advantage.
Things looked bleak for a Mustang squad that had scored three goals only twice in 2013. Klindworth gave his club some hope, though, answering back with his team-best fourth goal of the season a little over two minutes later (27:36), taking a through pass from Jorge Serrano (Sylmar, CA) and kicking it past Eagle keeper Jordan Brinkley to slice the deficit to two goals.
The Mustangs had a couple of chances to close the gap before halftime but Brinkley stopped shots by Serrano and Austin Michelson (Scotts Valley, CA) to preserve a 3-1 lead at the break.
It looked like the Eagles would add to their advantage early in the second stanza with one shot hitting the post and two more being saved by Bryant. However, the Mustangs survived the assault and kept the hosts off the scoreboard over the final 45 minutes.
On the other hand, the Mustangs had a few opportunities but Brinkley was up to the task until Klindworth struck again in the match's 80th (79:16) minute. Taking a long through ball from Brett Croft (Hesperia, CA) down the left side, the freshman sent the ball by Brinkley to bring the Mustangs within one goal.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs couldn't generate any more offense the rest of the way and fell by one goal for the fourth time this year. The Eagles outshot the Mustangs 21-14 overall, including a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Bryant finished with nine saves.
Searching for their first conference win, the Mustangs return home on Saturday to host Hope International in a 1:30pm start on Reese Field.
