LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Master’s College men’s soccer team (3-4) came up short 2-1 in a double overtime loss to the Mariners of Marymount College (4-2-1) Saturday evening at Long Beach City College.
After a scoreless first half, TMC’s Brett Croft (Hesperia, CA) notched his first goal of the season with an assist from Kenny Gardner (Palmdale, CA), putting the Mustangs up 1-0 at the 59:11 mark.
Just over five minutes later (64:41), the Mariners tied the match in heartbreaking fashion as Marymount’s Scott Smith put a penalty kick past TMC’s young defense and goalie Andrew Bussell (Bakersfield, CA), knotting the score at 1-1.
Both squads held their own and played to a draw in the first overtime, forcing the second extra session. However, just 3:30 into the second overtime, Marymount’s Emil Erickson put the decisive goal past Bussell, securing the Mariner victory.
The Mariners outshot TMC 8-7 and also topped the Mustangs 6-4 in shots on goal. Bussell had four saves for TMC while Croft led the Mustangs with two shots and one goal.
The Mustangs will return to Reese Field on Friday, September 21 at 3:00 PM and look to end their two-game losing streak against La Sierra.
