Men's Cross Country Schedule Announced

July 10, 2013

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Master’s College men’s cross country program has announced its 2013 schedule.

“Our schedule allows for ample opportunities to work on pack running,” said eighth-year cross country head coach Zach Schroeder. “We will have rigid competition within our conference and are excited about the three races that highlight our conference competition: The Mustang Challenge, Vanguard Invitational, and the NAIA West Coast Jamboree.  Also, we are looking forward to Irvine and Stanford as these races will really prepare us to compete at the national level.”

The Mustangs will open their season on Saturday, September 7, at the UC Irvine Invitational.

On September 21, the squad will stay local and compete at its second annual home event, The Mustang Challenge, at Santa Clarita’s Central Park.

Seven days later on September 28, the Mustangs will make the trip to Palo Alto for the elite Stanford Invitational.

October will consist of two crucial races for the squad: the Vanguard Invitational on the 12th, and the NAIA West Coast Jamboree on the 26th.

Both races will serve as a barometer for the team as they enter the always-competitive GSAC Championships on November 9.

Finally, on Saturday, November 23, the squad looks to compete again at the NAIA National Championships, this time in Rim Rock Farm, Kansas.

The 2013 season will boast a younger roster for the Mustangs as the squad parted ways with four seniors, returned five veterans, and signed three key runners in the offseason.

“I'm really looking forward to the team we are going to field this year,” further assessed Schroeder. “Although we are a much younger team and have graduated three of our top five, this year our guys have a unique opportunity to run as a pack.  If we can pack run, we will have an opportunity to be a top contender in the conference and with three conference titles the past three years I know this is something my guys really want to accomplish.  We have great leadership in Tyler Tockstein and John Hurd, and I'm really looking for these guys to step on the line ready to race with their team close by.”

Last season, recent graduate John Gilbertson completed the 2012 cross country season undefeated, winning each of the seven races he entered, including the UC Irvine Invitational, the Stanford Invitational, and the Bronco Invitational at Santa Clara University. All of this led to a first-place, NAIA All-American finish at the 2012 NAIA Cross Country National Championships. Anthony Pizzo complemented Gilbertson in the national championship race, finishing 15th overall, and nabbing NAIA All-American honors, too
