SANTA BARBARA, Calif -- Just when things were starting to look up for The Master’s College baseball squad, the Mustangs dropped a heartbreaking loss Friday afternoon, losing to the Westmont Warriors 2-1 in Santa Barbara.
Friday’s GSAC contest places the Mustangs under the .500 mark (10-11 GSAC, 21-14 overall) in conference play where they currently hold fourth place.
Mustang pitcher Zack Anderson (Boise, Idaho) shined by going 7 innings and giving 1 earned run, striking out two, and allowing only two hits which came in the first two innings of the game.
With the GSAC Showdown scoreless until the 4th, strong pitching was the theme of the day until Steven Karkenny (Chatsworth, CA), crossed home as Mustang designated hitter, Joe Riddle (Bakersfield, CA) doubled down the right field line putting TMC on the board 1-0.
However, the Mustangs lead didn’t stay for long as Westmont’s David Gabel scored off a single up the middle putting the Warriors even with the Mustangs.
The Mustangs, who were outhit 8-6, remained dormant for the rest of the day as Phillip Prickett scored for the Warriors in the 9th when Brent Fukishima hit a walk-off RBI from TMC’s James Scott (Santa Clarita, CA). The unearned run would put the finishing touch on the second of the four game series concluding the day's GSAC match at 2-1.
The Mustangs will have a shot at redemption as they face the Warriors again on Saturday March 31st, in a twin bill starting at 12:00 PM at Reese Field.
