Santa Clarita, Calif.- The Mustang baseball team won the first game of the double-header on Saturday by a score of 4-2. The win puts TMC’s record at 3-2 (0-0) and drops Arizona Christian to 0-4 (0-0).
Both offenses were quiet until the bottom of the third inning when Master’s put a three spot on the board to take a commanding lead. Tanner Leighton put the Mustangs on the board with a double to left-center that scored Ryan Shackelford. After that, Bryan Lucas, drew a walk with the bases loaded to put the score at 2-0. The last run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly by Cody Harris.
The starting pitcher for Master’s, Charlie Gillies, dominated for more than six innings, as he only surrendered four hits and two runs while striking out nine batters en route to his first win of the season.
Gillies would run into a bit of trouble in the seventh inning that would force him out of the game. The first batter of the inning was hit by a pitch, and the next Firestorm hitter would single through the right side. Two batters later, Garrison Hensley, would double down the right field line to close the gap to 3-2 in favor of the Mustangs. Coach Brooks made a call to the bullpen and brought in Daniel Sheaffer to put out the Arizona Christian rally.
Master’s would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Jon Popadics single that scored Sam Robison.
Sheaffer worked a perfect ninth inning to finish off the game and earn himself a save.
