Karkenny Signs With Mustangs

The Master's College is pleased to announce that All-CIF Los Angeles City Section outfielder/pitcher Steven Karkenny of Chatsworth High School has committed to play for the college next year.

Capping a sparkling three-year, varsity career this spring, Karkenny has developed into one of the Southland's premier players for Coach Tom Meusborn.  Earning a spot on the varsity as a sophomore, Karkenny saw limited action but hit .300 on a Chancellor squad that won the CIF Los Angeles City championship.

A year later, he put together a breakout campaign at the top of the order and on the mound.  He hit .425 with a .564 on-base percentage and scored 30 runs while driving in 22 more.  On the hill, he went 5-1, primarily as the club's closer, striking out 45 batters in 43 innings of work and posting a 1.63 earned run average.

After leading the Chancellors to the semifinals of the city playoffs, Karkenny was named the co-MVP of the West Valley League, first-team all-city, a Daily News All-Area first-team selection, and a second-team, all-state choice by MaxPreps.

Through the first 13 games of his senior year, Karkenny is hitting right around .300 with a .575 on-base percentage.  On the mound, he is 2-0 with one save in five appearances.

TMC head coach Monte Brooks commented, "Steven has a strong desire to grow in his Christian faith, to earn a degree in Business Administration, and to exercise his God-given talents in the Mustang baseball program. Steven is an outstanding outfielder and pitcher who exhibits leadership, intelligence, and competitiveness on the baseball field. It is exciting to have such a high caliber player and excellent student commit to the college. He will be a tremendous asset to The Master's College."

Karkenny has proved himself in the classroom as well as on the field.  He is on the way to four years as a scholar-athlete and has been nominated for CIF/Farmers Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.

Of his commitment to the college, Steve said, "I'm overwhelmed with the privilege and opportunity to continue my education and baseball career at The Master's College.  To be able to pursue the highest quality education, compete and mature as an athlete on the baseball field, in an environment that is second to none in the Christian faith, is a dream come true."

"Coming from the rich history of the Chatsworth High School baseball program and to be a part of its legacy has been amazing.  I have been blessed by Coach Meusborn, the entire coaching staff, and all of the incredible teammates I've been able to compete with.  As I focus on finishing my high school baseball career strong, I count it a privilege that I will have the opportunity to be coached in college by Coach Brooks, his coaching staff and compete with all of the incredibly talented players at TMC.  I am truly excited for the years to come and the opportunity Coach Brooks has afforded me to represent the school and its baseball program.  I look forward with anticipation to being another piece of the puzzle that helps TMC baseball strive with excellence toward being the best of the best in the GSAC and nationally."
