My name is John Melcon and I first came to The Master’s College from the under-appreciated state of New Jersey. I set foot on campus in the middle of WOW (Week of Welcome—I came late), having never seen the campus before. I wasn’t even sure I would be staying, but I did, and I loved it. I graduated in 2005 with a B.A. in History, then spent two years working as an intern at New Hope Community Church in north-east Los Angeles. During that time I married Kelly, the girl I’d started dating as a student here at TMC. Recently, I also obtained an M.A. in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. Kelly and I moved back to Santa Clarita a few years ago and I was given the exciting privilege of working here at the College, specifically focusing on International Students and Third-Culture Kids (TCKs). It’s been exciting and challenging to work with such a global group of students! – John Melcon

What is your favorite quote?
C.S. Lewis once wrote (in his essay “The Weight of Glory”) “You have never talked to a mere mortal.”
Who would you consider your role model?
He probably wouldn’t expect me to say this, but I’ve always admired Todd Bolen (a professor here at TMC) and would hope to imitate him as a father, a teacher, and a leader. Without question, he would also qualify as my favorite TMC professor.
What’s your favorite spot on the TMC campus to hang out?
When I was a student, it was definitely the “Caf.” It’s the intersection of two of the best things in life: good food and good friendship.
What are some of your hobbies and/or interests?
I love to be in the outdoors as much as possible (interesting how you can be “in” the outdoors—ever think about that?). California is a pretty good place to do that, though I do sometimes miss the snow or rain or weather change in general. Hiking, backpacking, camping, biking, and even roadtrips are great pastimes of mine. I also enjoy tinkering with old vehicles, like my Mercedes and 50cc Peugeot moped from the 80’s.
What CD is in your CD player right now?
Any album from Sara Groves.
What is your favorite coffee drink?
Just coffee. I mean, you can get sugar and caramel and whipped cream anywhere—when I go to Starbucks I just order the real deal: coffee, no cream, no sugar, no frills.
What book are you currently reading?
Ecclesiastes by King Solomon.
