SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- Former TMC pitcher Charlie Gillies makes his professional debut this evening when he starts for the Connecticut Tigers against the Lowell Spinners in Norwich, Connecticut. The first pitch will be thrown at 4:05 PM. (PCT)
Drafted by Detroit in the 10th round (334th pick overall) of the Major League Baseball Draft on June 5, Gillies was assigned to the Tigers’ Class A affiliate which plays in the New York-Penn League.
The righthander from Castaic, California, capped a two-year stint with the Mustangs this spring with a brilliant senior campaign, going 8-6 with a 2.17 ERA while striking out 118 batters in 99 2/3 innings of work. He was named the GSAC Pitcher of the Year and NCCAA Pitcher of the Year, and earned All-GSAC and NCCAA first-team All-American honors.
