EL CAJON, Calif. – The Master’s College volleyball team kept its playoff hopes alive Tuesday night by beating the San Diego Christian College Hawks in three sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-20).
With the win, the Lady Mustangs improve their overall record to 16-10 and 6-5 in GSAC play.
Coming off a non-conference loss to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Saturday, TMC bounced back against the Hawks by maintaining a heavy attack.
The first set was in favor of the Lady Mustangs before the Hawks battled to take the lead at 21-20. Aubrey Pyburn (Burbank, CA) tied the match by smashing a kill off an assist from Emily Clark (Lake Forest, CA). After back-to-back errors from the Hawks, Pyburn posted another kill, this time off an Aubrey Bekendam (Orland, CA) assist. Allison Child (Shingle Springs, CA) finished the set by posting a decisive kill.
The Lady Mustangs trailed in the second set until they were able to tie the score at 10-10 when Bekendam posted a service ace. TMC then took the lead on the next point after a Hawk error. From there, the Lady Mustangs never let the Hawks lead or tie the match as they routed SDCC with a 25-20 win highlighted by Child with five kills and Britney Jones (Northridge, CA) with a pair of aces.
In the third set, the teams faced three lead changes until the Lady Mustangs completed the frame with a 25-20 victory. The momentum fell in favor of TMC when they went on a four-point run moving to a 20-17 advantage. With the Mustangs up 22-20, TMC capitalized on a Hawk error and two Child kills to seal the victory.
Statistically, Bekendam led the Lady Mustangs with a .556 kill percentage, 26 assists, 15 digs, and three service aces. Child posted a team-high 26 total attacks and 13 kills, while Clark dug 13 balls.
With only five more conference matches, the Lady Mustangs have a great chance to boost themselves in the league standings as they currently sit in fourth-place.
Now, TMC hits the road to face Arizona Christian University.
First serve is set for 2:00 PM in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday.
