Firestorm Flickers Against Mustang Offense
October 5, 2013
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Sandwiched between last Tuesday’s 3-2 victory over No. 10 Westmont (14-4, 2-3 GSAC), and next Tuesday’s showdown against NAIA volleyball juggernaut, No. 1 Concordia (14-0, 5-0 GSAC), The Master’s College women’s volleyball team took a breather Saturday night against conference opponent Arizona Christian University (1-13, 0-5 GSAC) on Bross Court.
At the end of three quick sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-14), the Lady Mustangs doused the Firestorm and lifted their 2013 season record to 14-3 and 4-1 in conference play.
“It was a good team win and I’m proud of the girls for executing well.” said Lady Mustang head coach Bobby Blanken. “I have a lot of sympathy for Arizona Christian as they lost their starting outside hitter yesterday in their match against Biola. I’m really looking forward to playing them again at their place when they are at full strength.”
Statistically, TMC, which ranks 16th in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Poll, posted 49 digs, 38 kills, and 38 assists. Scoring was evenly spread as both Allison Child (Shingle Springs, CA) and Aubrey Pyburn (Burbank, CA) led TMC with seven kills each. Close behind, Stacey Jones (Scottsdale, AZ), Morgan Fay (Santa Clarita, CA), and Ashley Newton (Henderson, NV) each chipped in six kills. Aubrey Bekendam (Orland, CA) claimed 20 assists while Rebecca Peluffo (La Crescenta, CA) earned 13 digs.
Notably, all active players on the Lady Mustangs’ roster experienced valuable playing time against the Firestorm.
Next up for TMC is a 7:00 p.m. match against No. 1 Concordia on Tuesday night on Bross Court. Blanken and his Lady Mustangs enter Tuesday’s match looking to snap Concordia’s historic 51-game winning streak.
“Concordia is a very solid team. The numbers they put up stand as a testament to their excellence,” further commented Blanken. “We’re going to have to execute well and play a very polished match. I really look forward to sharpening our team's focus in the next few days.”
