Santa Clarita, CA- The Master's College volleyball team defeated No. 10 Vanguard University at home on Tuesday night in four sets (25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20). The win puts TMC's record at 19-13 (7-10) while Vanguard drops to 21-11 (10-4).

Samantha Dougherty had a team high 13 kills for the Lady Mustangs while Ashley Newton and Rachel Taylor had 12 kills each. Tami Brown chipped in with 11 kills. Alyssa Gergins dished out 24 assists for Master's. Taylor also had a team high 17 digs.

In the first set, Master’s got out to an eight point lead at the 15-7 mark with great defense and well placed kills from Brown, Dougherty, and Taylor. Vanguard would battle back to cut the lead to four at a few different points in the set, but the Lady Mustangs would not let the visitors get any closer. TMC would close out the game on another kill from Taylor to make the final score 25-17.

The second set was a close race in the beginning as both teams went back and forth. At the midway point in the set TMC took control and never looked back. Kills by Dougherty and Taylor extended the Lady Mustangs lead to 20-14. Jenna Kapuscinski had the final kill to give Master’s a 25-20 victory.

The third set would prove to be close in the beginning just like the second as the teams would work to a 11-9 score in favor of Vanguard. The visiting team would stretch their lead to 17-13 at one point, but Master’s battled right back to make it a 19-17 game. A few points later, Brown came through with a big kill to pull the Lady Mustangs within a point at 21-22. On the very next point, Brown blocked a kill from Vanguard to tie the game at 22-22. Despite their efforts, TMC would eventually fall 25-23 to force a fourth set.

Both teams came out swinging in the fourth set as Master’s was fighting to close out the match and Vanguard wanted to stay alive. TMC would eventually build a 20-16 lead before Vanguard fought back to make it 20-19. After a timeout by Coach Blanken, the Lady Mustangs came out and scored five out of the next six points in the set to take it 25-20 which also gave Master’s the 3-1 victory for the match.

Coach Blanken commented, “They saw opportunities and not obstacles all year. This is really a tribute to their mental preparation,” when asked about his team’s effort tonight.

The Lady Mustangs will return to action on Saturday night as they host Biola on senior night at 7:00 pm.
