Azusa, CA- The Master’s College volleyball team was beat in four sets by No. 9 Azusa Pacific on Saturday night (15-25, 25-20, 18-25, 20-25). The loss sets the Lady Mustangs record at 18-13 (6-10) as Azusa goes to 25-6 (12-4).
Victoria Callihan had a team high 13 kills for Master’s. Alyssa Gergins had a game high 23 assists and Rebecca Gieske also had a game high in digs with 27.
Azusa used the first set to make a statement and set the tone for the rest of the match. The set was close early on, but the Cougars would eventually maintain a sizeable lead for most of the set. TMC would take a lead at 5-4 on a kill by Samantha Dougherty, but it would not last long as Azusa would tie the score on the next point and take the lead the point after that. The Cougars would never give that lead up as they went on to take the set 25-15.
In the second set, it would be the Lady Mustangs who would take control. Master’s would keep the lead most of the set until APU tied the score at 16-16 with a 6-2 run. Coach Blanken’s team would answer right back by finishing the set on a 9-4 run to win 25-20.
The third set would see the momentum swing back in favor of Azusa Pacific. After taking a 3-2 lead very early in the set, the Cougars would quickly make their lead 9-2 and the Lady Mustangs would never make it up. TMC would never get closer than four, and Azusa went on to win 25-18.
Coach Blanken’s team would not give up in the fourth set though. It was a back and forth set the majority of the way, and the Lady Mustangs were giving the home team all they could handle. The set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. Despite getting big plays at a few different points in the set, TMC would eventually fall by a score of 25-20 which would end the match at 3-1.
The Lady Mustangs will host Vanguard on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
