Santa Clarita, Calif.- The Master’s College volleyball team took a match against Arizona Christian in three sets on Tuesday night (25-20, 25-13, 25-22). The win advances the Lady Mustangs to the NCCAA West Region final later this week.
In the first set, Master’s and Arizona Christian would trade scoring spurts throughout the set to keep it close. Eventually, Arizona Christian would tie the set at 18-18. TMC would not allow the Firestorm to take the lead, however. The Lady Mustangs would seal the set with a 7-2 run as Ashley Newton would come up big for Master’s in the end as she tallied two of the final three points. The Lady Mustangs took the set by a score of 25-20.
Coach Blanken’s team came out in control of the second set and never let up. Samantha Dougherty had two straight aces to extend the Lady Mustangs lead to 14-7. A few points later, Rachel Taylor scored two straight kills to put TMC up by a score of 17-11. The Lady Mustangs would only allow the Firestorm to score two more points the rest of the set as they would dominate in every aspect en route to a 25-13 win.
The home team came out in the third set a little slow. A few unforced errors by Master’s gave the Firestorm and early lead at 6-2. It wouldn’t take long for Coach Blanken’s team to wake up though. The Lady Mustangs would real off an 8-1 run capped by two Jamie Long aces to put Master’s up 10-7. TMC would go on to win the third set 25-22 as four different Lady Mustangs each tallied kills in the decisive set.
Alyssa Gergins had a team high 17 assists, and Rebecca Gieske had 14 digs to lead TMC. Samantha Dougherty lead the way with eight kills as Ashley Newton had a .500 hitting percentage.
