Riverside, Calif. - The Master’s College volleyball team was defeated on Thursday night by California Baptist in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-18).  The loss came in the West Region Finals of the NCCAA tournament.

Leading the way for Master’s was Victoria Callihan with seven kills.  Ashley Newton had a team high .500 hitting percentage.  Jamie Long had 12 assists, and Rebecca Gieske had 14 digs.

Cal Baptist was in control from the beginning of the first set.  The last tie in the set came at the 2-2 point.  After that, Master’s would see the set slowly get away from them.  Four different Lady Mustangs had kills in the opening set, but it would not be enough as CBU would not let them make any sort of run on their way to a 25-17 win.

The second set was much tighter most of the way as there were seven ties throughout the set.  The last tie came at the 12-12 mark, but TMC would not stop competing the entire set.  The Lancers would go up by a score of 17-13 before Master’s would storm back to cut the lead to 21-19.  Jenna Kapuscinski, Samantha Dougherty, Victoria Callihan, and Ashley Newton all had kills during that run by TMC.  Coach Blanken’s team could not quite complete the comeback, however, and Cal Baptist would go on to take the set 25-20.

The Lady Mustangs saw CBU storm out of the gates in the third and decisive set as the home team worked to a 10-5 lead.  TMC would battle back to cut the deficit to three a few different times, but the Lancers would be too much in the end.  The final margin was 25-18 which gave Cal Baptist the 3-0 win.

The loss eliminated Coach Blanken’s squad from the NCCAA tournament.
