2013 Lady Mustang Volleyball Schedule Released
July 10, 2013
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Master’s College Athletic Department has released the 2013 volleyball schedule.
"This year is going to be a challenge in more ways than one,” said fourth-year head coach Bobby Blanken. “We have our largest recruiting class, a tough pre-season and conference schedule, and high expectations from our 2012 breakout year. I'm genuinely excited and am looking forward to how God will use such challenges to make us more like Him."
This year’s regular-season slate for the No. 11 nationally-ranked Lady Mustangs will consist of 18 road matches and 10 home contests. Of the 28 meetings, TMC will face four nationally-ranked teams: defending national champion and top-ranked Concordia, No. 4 Biola, No. 10 College of Idaho, and No. 16 Westmont. Notably, three of the four nationally-ranked teams the Lady Mustangs will face (Concordia, Biola, and Westmont) are fellow members of the Golden State Athletic Conference.
The 2013 campaign will begin on Thursday, August 22, in a road match against Lewis-Clark St. (ID) at the Biola Summer Slam tournament in La Mirada. TMC’s first home match will be on September 4 at 7:00 PM against Capilano University (BC, Canada) in the newly-renovated MacArthur Center. The TMC-Capilano showdown will be the first official athletic competition held in the updated gymnasium.
Last season, the Lady Mustangs maintained excellence from start to finish, qualifying for their first-ever NAIA National Tournament under Blanken. Sparked by four winning streaks of at least five matches, the Mustangs finished 27-8 overall and 10-4 in the GSAC where they finished in third place.
At the end of the 2012 campaign, Blanken was named GSAC Coach of the Year while outside hitter Sam Dougherty was named a second-team NAIA All-American. Standout freshman Aubrey Bekendam earned the 2012 AVCA/NAIA Freshman of the Year award. These accolades bode well for the 2013 Lady Mustang roster as it displays a younger squad of eight newly signed freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors, and two seniors.
