Escondido, Calif. – Taking a break from their Golden State Athletic Conference schedule, The Lady Mustangs challenged the NAIA’s 16th ranked Cal State San Marcos Cougars. The Mustangs, whose season now sits at 24-4, took the evening in four sets (25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20) in front of a packed crowed in Escondido.
The Cougars started off strong in all four sets, which caused TMC to play catch up for the better part of the evening. But the Mustangs' efforts were not in vain as TMC only allowed CSUSM to run away with set three by the way of a five-point run.
The fourth set forced the Mustangs to live up to their seventh place national ranking and rally early on to even their deficit to 10-10. From that point, the Mustangs retained their lead and finished the match at the tune of 3-1.
Maintaining her phenomenal season, TMC’s Sam Dougherty (Madera, CA) lead the way with 21 kills. Rebecca Peluffo (La Crescenta, CA) tacked on 23 digs while teammate Aubrey Bekendam (Orland, CA) chipped in 18. Bekendam also had a game-high 24 assists for the evening.
Collectively, the Lady Mustangs tallied 51 kills, 48 assists, 89 digs, and posted an attack percentage of .198. The evening’s non-conference match also consisted of nine lead changes and 22 tie scores.
The Lady Mustangs return home on Saturday night for a conference match against the Arizona Christian Firestorm at 7:00 PM in Bross gym.
