LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Lady Mustang volleyball team notched their third win of the 2012 campaign in three sets (25-19, 25-11, 25-23) against Southern Oregon University Thursday night in the second round of the Biola Summer Slam.
TMC exploded out of the gates as the Mustangs began the first set with an impressive 9-3 run. The Mustangs retained the lead as they managed a cushion of at least three points throughout the latter part of the set. The first set was put on ice as Alyssa Gergins (Woodland Hills, CA) delivered a decisive kill to end at 25-19.
The Mustangs cruised through the second set with a quick 25-11 victory. TMC’s Sam Dougherty (Madera, CA) demonstrated excellent finesse as the junior outside hitter claimed six kills. Dougherty continued her stellar play, leading the Lady Mustangs with 10 kills and a .182 hitting percentage. She also added eight digs.
Set three, however, proved to be more of a challenge for Coach Bobby Blanken and his Lady Mustangs. Being close the entire way with six ties, TMC managed to fend off the rallying Raiders and strung two points together to take the set at 25-23.
TMC was led by Gergins who had 45 assists, Rebecca Peluffo (La Crescenta, CA) who had 13 digs, and Dougherty who had a team high 10 kills. Tori Callihan (Simi Valley, CA) had a team-high 13 kills and the led the Mustangs with a .545 hit percentage.
The Lady Mustangs begin the second day of the Biola Summer Slam with an 8:30 AM match against Midland (NE).
