SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Stellar play on part of the Lady Mustangs Volleyball squad lifted their record to 6-0 in a non-conference match against the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University (4-2).
Leading the shellacking of the Golden Eagles was Mustang outside hitter Sam Dougherty (Madera, CA). Dougherty notched nine kills and finished the night with a .471 hitting percentage. Not to be overlooked was TMC’s libero Rebecca Peluffo (La Crescenta, CA). The standout junior finished the night with a team high 18 digs. Finally, setter Alyssa Gergins (Murrieta, CA) claimed 27 assists in the Mustangs 3-0 route of the Eagles.
Avoiding a rough start to the day, the Lady Mustangs pulled out of a 5-5 tie and managed to take the first set by the reigns. Maintaining at least a two point lead the majority of the game, the Mustangs clipped the Eagles wings at 25-23 and sealed the set with a decisive kill by Tori Callihan (Simi Valley, CA). Callihan chipped in five kills and a two assists in the Mustangs victory.
Set two was all TMC as the Lady Mustangs dominated the Golden Eagles at 25-12. The Mustangs second set boasted a collective 16 kills, one error, and a .500 hitting percentage.
The evening’s third and final set saw more fight from La Sierra as they looked to tally their third consecutive win of the season. TMC gave little help to the Eagles’ aspirations as the Mustangs stampeded out of the gates and never let up. TMC concluded the night and took the third set at 25-19.
“I was very happy with Sam Dougherty's performance today” states Mustang head Coach Bobby Blanken. “She’s becoming a strong centerpiece for our offense, and her hitting percentage from tonight is a telltale sign that she’s been making serious progress.
Further commending the Mustangs performance, third-year head coach Bobby Blanken states “Our middles were also key in tonight’s victory as they were clicking and being able to make some great passes and blocks. The way they are playing now, they’ll be tough to stop later in the season.”
Blanken and his 6-0 Mustangs will face their next onslaught of challenges as TMC’s Volleyball squad travels to Irvine to participate in the 2012 Concordia Tournament. The Mustangs are scheduled to play Westminster (UT) at 12:00 pm on Friday, August 31st.
