Pride Forces Mustang Fall
October 16, 2013
LA MIRADA, Calif. – With less than a minute left on the clock in double overtime, something had to give.
Unfortunately, what gave was The Master’s College women’s soccer team’s defense as No. 6 Vanguard’s Yarbor Vusc squeezed a golden goal past Ilyssa Espiritu (Bakersfield, CA), giving the Lions a 1-0 double overtime victory.
TMC, who ranks No. 15 on the most recent NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, now possesses an 11-2 (3-2 GSAC) overall record, while Vanguard’s record advances to a 11-1, and 4-1 in conference play.
“It’s always a bummer to lose with 24 seconds left, but we had a mental breakdown and Vanguard capitalized on it,” commented Lady Mustang head coach Curtis Lewis. “There was good ebb and flow to the game, and we created some opportunities, especially in the two overtimes.”
With a quiet first half in the books, TMC had an aggressive start to the second half, but was overmatched by the Pride’s defense who kept the Lady Mustang offense at bay.
The first overtime was highlighted by a Vanguard free kick that passed over the net, keeping the two teams tied at 0-0. Devon Goff (Canyon Country, CA) and Natasha Coyle (La Habra, CA) tried to conclude things moments later, but both missed wide right on two separate occasions.
But, in the final overtime, Vanguards' offense overpowered the Lady Mustangs with 24 seconds on the clock, icing the match at 1-0.
To TMC’s credit, the Lady Mustangs manufactured 15 shots, 7 corner kicks, and tallied 9 saves over the course of the four frames. Coyle led TMC’s stat sheet with 6 shots and 1 shot on goal, while Tara Struiksma (Ontario, CA) notched 3 shots and 2 shots on goal. Defensively, Espiritu tallied 8 saves.
“I was really proud of the girls as they honored the Lord with their attitudes and their play,” further commented Lewis. “Hopefully we can bounce back and play well against a strong San Diego Christian team on Saturday.”
TMC remains in the hornet’s nest as the squad now prepares to travel to El Cajon for a 12:00 p.m. match against San Diego Christian on Saturday, followed by a 3:00 p.m. home match against No. 3 Westmont next Wednesday.
