Benson Hat Trick Lifts Mustangs Past Eagles
August 31, 2013
Prescott, AZ -- Jordan Benson tallied three goals and assisted on two others as The Master's College women's soccer team stayed undefeated (4-0) with a 5-2 win over Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Saturday evening.
Benson (Corona, CA), who redshirted last year, has made the most of her first year in the blue and gold, scoring a nation-tying best eight goals so far, highlighted by a four-goal outing vs. Jamestown of North Dakota on August 22 and then Saturday night's hat trick against the Eagles.
The first of those tallies came in the match's 24th minute when Benson scored in unassisted fashion at the 23:18 mark.
Just over four minutes later (27:42), the Mustangs doubled their advantage when junior forward Jessica Long (Wailuku, HI), off an assist from Benson, made it 2-0 with her second goal of the campaign.
The Mustangs continued their assault (28-8 shot advantage) on the Eagle goal less than two minutes later when Natasha Coyle (La Habra, CA) took another pass from Benson and put it between the pipes for a 3-0 lead at 29:41 mark. It was Coyle's second goal of the year.
The Eagles finally broke through on a Kalyn Goodenough goal with 6:33 left in the opening half but the Mustangs were still very much in control at the break.
Benson made sure her team would stay in control, too, scoring twice more in the second half to salt the game away. Her second goal of the match came at the 57:36 mark and she capped off her big day less than 18 minutes later, completing a hat trick for a 5-1 lead at the 76:06.
The Eagles added a harmless goal with 8:26 remaining in the game.
Four matches into the 2013 season, Benson is on a prolific pace with eight goals and four assists for 20 points, the second-highest total in the country. She's pacing an offense that has scored 17 times in its first four games.
She and her teammates will look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday when they return to Reese Field on Tuesday to host the La Verne in a 4:00pm start.
