October 23, 2012

By Alan Grosbach, Manager of Communications and Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Lee (Tenn.) took back the No. 1 ranking in the eighth edition of the 2012 NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Lady Flames move into the top spot by earning 19 first-place votes and 590 points. The No. 1 ranking is the 12th overall for Lee and first since Sept. 4.

Previous No. 1 Concordia (Ore.) dropped to No. 3 following a 1-0 double overtime loss against unranked Northwest Christian (Ore.) on Oct. 20. Despite the loss, the Cavaliers received one first-place vote and 559 points. Similarly to Lee, Lindsey Wilson climbed one position to No. 2 in the poll. The Blue Raiders received the final first-place vote and 563 points. Fourth-ranked Mobile (Ala.) and No. 5 William Carey (Miss.) round out the top five for the third-straight week with 534 and 516 points, respectively.

No. 18 Benedictine (Kan.) enjoyed the largest jump within the poll. The Ravens are 14-1-1 on the season and have outscored opponents 39-3 during their current nine-match unbeaten streak. Benedictine improved seven positions and garnered 252 points. Outside of the Ravens, no team recorded a positive movement of more than one place.

Falling the farthest among ranked teams was Baker (Kan.) and Auburn Montgomery (Ala.). The Wildcats, who have lost two-straight including a 3-2 defeat at Benedictine on Oct. 20, tumbled five spots from No. 17 to No. 22, while the Warhawks dropped four positions from No. 19 to No. 23. Auburn Montgomery is winless in its last five matches, including a 0-0 draw against Spring Hill (Ala.) last Saturday.

For the first time since Aug. 18, 2009, Rocky Mountain (Mont.) appears in the Coaches' Poll. The Battlin' Bears are the only unbeaten team remaining in the NAIA with an 11-0-2 record. Rocky Mountain's most notable victory this season was a 3-1 win against then-No. 24 Westminster (Utah) on Oct. 19. Also joining the poll this week is No. 25 Davenport (Mich.). The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference leading Panthers were last ranked on Sept. 18 (No. 21).

Westminster (No. 24) and Concordia (Calif.) (No. 23) fell from the rankings this week.

Thirteen conferences/independents/unaffiliated groups are represented throughout the Top 25, led by five squads from the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). Hailing from the SSAC are Lee, Mobile, William Carey, No. 17 Brenau (Ga.), and Auburn Montgomery. The Golden State Athletic Conference, Heart of America Athletic Conference and the Unaffiliated Group consisting of the Frontier Conference and TranSouth Athletic Conference are tied for second with three teams each.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conference/independent/unaffiliated groups. The next Top 25 will be announced on Oct. 30.
