Costa Mesa, CA - No. 5 and top-seeded Vanguard tallied two first-half goals and then made them stand up in a 2-0 blanking of The Master's in a GSAC Tournament semi-final match Friday afternoon in Costa Mesa.
The loss not only knocked the Mustangs out of the conference tourney but also ended their season at 12-6-2. It was the second time this season that the Mustangs had been shut out by the Lions who improved to 15-2.
The hosts did so by scoring twice in the first 38 minutes of action. The first goal came at the 13:31 mark when Amanda Couch fed Jordan Davidson for a shot that beat Mustang goalie Ilyssa Espiritu (Bakersfield, CA) to the left side of the net for her 15th goal of the year.
The second and final goal of the match was scored almost 25 minutes later in unassisted fashion by Kayla Arenas. Arenas took the ball off a save by Espiritu and shot the ball into the lower left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs had scoring chances in the first half but Lion keeper Lauren Terry was up to the challenge, notching three saves, including two in the last five minutes off the feet of Shea Richards and Devin Goff.
There were fewer such opportunities in the final period when the Mustangs managed just one shot on goal by Richards while the Lions had four. As the final score indicates, each shot was turned by the goalies.
