Lady Mustangs Stampede Royals

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Master’s University women’s basketball team earned its first Golden State Athletic Conference victory of the 2016-17 campaign after beating Hope International 76-47 Saturday night on Bross Court.

Saturday’s win improved No. 17 TMU’s overall record to 10-4 and 1-3 in GSAC play.

“It definitely took longer than anticipated to get the first conference "W", but I think that our squad is learning tons right now which will pay huge dividends,” commented TMU head coach Dan Waldeck. “I thought our whole team was engaged and focused, which helped us play with a great mentality. I'm excited to see how the improvements we’re making in practice continue to reveal themselves in the way we play and compete.”

Things went the Lady Mustangs’ way from the get-go as TMU rocketed out to 6-0 lead in the opening four minutes of play. While the Royals did manage to tie the game two minutes later, the Lady Mustangs went on a 13-4 run and closed the first quarter with a 19-10 advantage.

TMU continued its dominance in the second quarter by maintaining a healthy, double digit lead. The Lady Mustangs’ largest lead of the first half (17 points), came with 17 seconds left in the second quarter when Bianca Cubello (Riverside, CA) delivered a long-range jumper, giving TMU a 35-18 lead at halftime.

At the break, TMU went 14-33 (42%) from the field, 2-8 (25%) on three pointers, and 5-7 (71%) on free throws. Also at the break, Cubello highlighted TMU’s efforts with 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.

After halftime, the Lady Mustangs picked up where they left off by leading the Royals by double figures for the entirety of the second half. TMU posted a game-high 36-point lead on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter when Aubrey Bekendam (Orland, CA) scored on a jumper with 02:28 (72-36) left to play, and when Ashley Bartow (Sun Prairie, WI) drove in a layup at the 1:57 mark (74-38).

Cubello finished the evening by earning her sixth double-double of the season after grabbing 13 boards and scoring 12 points. Megan Lindsley (Vancouver, WA) and Bartow each scored 10 points. Sabrina Thompson (Valencia, CA) led TMU with five assists, while Bartow, Bekendam, and Kelly Burns (Yorba Linda, CA), each tallied three steals.

Collectively, TMU went 29-75 (38%) from the field, 7-19 (36%) from behind the arc, and 11-15 (73%) from the charity stripe.

On Wednesday, the Lady Mustangs will travel to El Cajon for game against San Diego Christian (12-3, 2-2 GSAC). Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
