Santa Clarita, Calif.- The Lady Mustangs basketball team notched a quality win against No. 11 Southern Nazarene by a score of 49-43 on Saturday afternoon. The win puts the Lady Mustangs record at 5-3 on the season.
The first half was all about defense for both teams as both squads shot under 25 percent for the half. The low shooting percentages were due to stifling defense from each team which limited quality shots.
TMC finally broke through in the last few minutes with some clutch three-pointers. Zoe Scott nailed a trey as the shot clock expired to give Master’s the lead at 14-11. Then Ella Joines made one on the very next possession followed by a Lena Rivera make to stretch the lead to 20-11 for the home team going into half.
The defense continued in the second half, but each team found ways to score. Master’s got out to its largest lead at 29-16 with 15 minutes left in the half on a layup from Lena Rivera. After that, Southern Nazarene went on a 21-7 run to take the lead at 37-36 with less than seven minutes left.
Coach Waldeck’s team would answer the call and would take control in the final five minutes. Whitney Best led the Lady Mustangs down the stretch with eight points in the last 3:30 of the game. The final margin was 49-43.
Best had a game-high 17 points followed by Joines and Rivera with 12 and 11. Morgan Schwegler played big defensively as she came up with two blocks.
TMC will return to action next Saturday as they travel to take on San Diego Christian.
