Lady Mustangs Feast on Cougars
November 16, 2012
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Returning home from Westminster, Utah, where they spent three days competing in the 2012 Westminster Fall Classic, the Lady Mustangs basketball squad extended their season to an undefeated 4-0 in their home-opener against Cal State San Marcos (3-3) Friday night in Bross Gym.
Besides the 11-6 deficit the Mustangs faced in the early minutes of the game, TMC never let the visiting Cougars regain a lead in an evening that eventually showed a final score of 68-47 in favor of the home team.
Theresa Brown (Eugene, OR) broke the tie with 11 minutes left in the first half, which proved to be the first of many runs that the Lady Mustangs would go on. Over the next four minutes, TMC extended their score to 20-11 by the way of a lay-up from Jacquelyn Marshall (San Clemente, CA), a three pointer from Olivia Thompson (Huntington Beach, CA), and a shot from Kelly Burns (Yorba Linda, CA).
That proved to be last time in the first half that the Lady Mustangs would enjoy that extensive of a lead as the Cougars started to make a comeback in the final two minutes, closing it to eight points (28-20) heading into the intermission.
TMC’s half-time stats were less than desirable as the squad shot a minimal 28.9% (11-38) from the field.
But, the Lady Mustangs burst out on the scene coming off the break establishing their lead to 37-24 in the first six minutes of the second half. Brown lead the way with a lay-up, Lena Rivera (Allen, TX) added two free throws, Marshall with a three-pointer, and another lay-up by Burns.
TMC wasn’t anywhere close to being done as the Lady Mustangs breezed through the second half, and at one point extended their lead by 25 points at the 2:48 mark. Down the stretch, the Cougars would close the game to 66-47 before a lay-up by Olivia Thompson would bring the final score to 68-47.
The Mustangs' accuracy in the second half rose to 48% (13-27) which was plenty as the visitors were held to 35% (11-31) shooting over the final 20 minutes and 31% for the night.
Marshall went 7-12 from the field and 3-3 from the line to earn her 18 points. The junior forward also lead the team with 10 rebounds. Lena Rivera lead the squad with 5 assists, while Zoe Scott (Spokane, WA) and Kelley Burns both tallied 9 points each.
The women’s basketball team has plenty to be thankful for going into their Thanksgiving holiday. On top of being 4-0, the program will enjoy a well deserved 10 day break. The Lady Mustangs will return to play in road game on November 26, against La Sierra University (1-6) in a 7:00 PM match.
