PALO ALTO, Calif -- For the first time in the history of The Master’s College track program, the Mustangs had the privilege of entering two athletes in the prestigious Stanford Invitational, held this past weeekend in Palo Alto.
Although the Mustang duo of Anthony Pizzo and John Gilbertson qualified in the 5k and 10k, respectively, they both chose to compete in the 5k on Friday. Running in the second-fastest of the four 5000m heats, Pizzo set a new school record with a time of 14:03.57 while Gilbertson was just a few strides behind at 14:04.86 as both worked in tandem to make some TMC history.
Competing against a variety of professional athletes and some of the best NCAA Division I athletes in the nation, Pizzo and Gilbertson were the only representatives of the NAIA in their heat. The pair raced well and crossed the finish line 13 and 14 seconds off the provisional qualifying mark for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 5k. The Mustang duo looks to break 14 minutes with their next opportunity on the track and continue to lead The Master’s College distance squad to new heights.
Both the men’s and women’s track programs will be back in the lanes Saturday, April 14, at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Pomona.
