CLAREMONT, Calif -- The California-Nevada Track and Field Championships began Saturday in Claremont, CA, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.  Entrance to the meet is based on times submitted through the TFRRS system during the months of January, February, and March; in order to qualify for the meet, athletes from invited schools must post one of the top 36 times in their event.  The meet’s competition includes athletes and institutions across all divisions, NCAA divisions I, II and III, as well as NAIA.

The two day meet got off to a good start for Master’s with several of the Mustang men competing in the Distance Carnival portion of the meet.

However, it was Sunday that proved to be the highlight of the California-Nevada Championships for the Mustangs, as John Gilbertson claimed the championship title in the men’s 1500m, setting a new school record along the way.  Gilbertson ran a very tactical race, positioning himself well throughout the first three laps of competition.  On the bell lap, the stand-out runner began his final push.  With an outstanding finish, Gilbertson demonstrated his remarkable closing speed, outkicking Reesey Byers from Sacramento State in what was a near photo finish at the line.  Gilbertson won the race in 3:51.55.

Teammate Anthony Pizzo also claimed a top spot at the championship meet, finishing 4th overall in the men’s 1500m, just a few seconds off his personal best (3:53.32)

Gilbertson is now 4th on the NAIA National Performance List in the men’s 1500m; Anthony Pizzo is 8th.  On the 5000m performance list, Pizzo and Gilbertson are 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Within the GSAC, Gilbertson and Pizzo are 1st and 2nd respectively for the 1500m; in the 5000m Pizzo is on top of the conference, with Gilbertson claiming the 2nd best mark.  Also noteworthy is Josiah Downer, ranked 6th in the 5000m among the GSAC.  Downer also currently holds the fastest 10,000m time posted by the conference.  Camden McAlister holds the 5th best GSAC mark in the 10k; Matthew Crichton has the 3rd best mark in the 3000m steeplechase, and David Eller is 5th.

Thus far the men’s national team includes: John Gilberson and Anthony Pizzo, with qualifying marks in the 1500m, 5000m, and marathon; Josiah Downer, Camden McAlister and Tyler Tockstein in the marathon; and Matthew Crichton in the 3000m steeplechase.

The Mustangs have little time to revel in the success achieved over the weekend as John Gilbertson and Anthony Pizzo will represent The Master's College at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto from Friday, April 6th to Saturday, April 7th; this one of the most prestigious collegiate track invitational’s in the nation.
