MARION, Ind. – The 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships concluded Saturday with four Mustangs representing The Master’s College in two different events.
At 6:00 AM (EST), Camden McAlister (Saugus, CA) ran his final race as a Mustang in the men’s marathon final alongside John Hurd (Fairview, PA) and Tyler Tockstein (Santa Clarita, CA). Tockstein led the Mustangs’ efforts with a final time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, and 25.60 seconds, finishing 15th out of a field of 46 athletes. Hurd followed with a 27th place finish at 2:41:40.70, while McAlister paced himself for a 34th place finish at 2:46:08.60, setting a new personal record along the way.
John Gilbertson (Saugus, CA) placed first in the men’s 5k final at 14:08.07, earning NAIA national championship status for the event. On Thursday, Gilbertson was named an NAIA All-American after running the men’s 10k final in 30:25.89. Gilbertson’s accomplishment of reaching NAIA All-American honors in both the 5k and 10k was a feat never before achieved by a Mustang track athlete.
As the Mustangs make the trip back to Santa Clarita, there is very little doubt that TMC’s track program will be back, competing for more national recognition, next year. But for now, the team will enjoy a few weeks off and then begin summer training for cross country.
