FULLERTON, Calif. – The Master’s College men’s track & field team competed for the second time in 2013 on Saturday night at the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton.  The event hosted a myriad of the nation’s top talent, including athletes from NCAA Division I, II, and III teams.

429179_431153976967087_701317747_n.jpgJason Logan (Spartanburg, SC), who is currently TMC’s lone multi-sport athlete (men’s basketball), put his high-flying acrobatic skills on display for the first time with the Mustangs by competing in the high jump.  Logan’s event produced a fair amount of suspense as he was forced to compete in a jump-off against Steven Williams from Pasadena City College to determine the day’s best jumper. After a total of 13 attempts with the best jump consisting of 2.0m (6’ 6-3/4’’), Logan finally walked away with the title “Best Jumper of the Day".

“We anticipate Jason exceeding the 2.0m mark later this season,” commented Mustang head coach Zach Schroeder.  “We think he can really compete. He won the event his first time out and is an extremely well- rounded athlete. I believe he will be a major contender in the conference as well as the NAIA.”

The entirety of the Mustang distance team competed in the 5000-meter event, seven of which ran under 16 minutes.  “This is the deepest team TMC has ever had,” assessed Schroeder.  “This bodes well for the future of the program as these are the fastest opening times of a season we have ever had.”

Coming off his phenomenal cross country season where he claimed the NAIA individual championship, John Gilbertson (Saugus, CA), picked up where he left off by placing second in the event with a time of 14 minutes, and 2.26 seconds.  Gilbertson’s time was only five seconds off his lifetime best (13:57.00) and only 12 seconds off the stadium meet record (13:50).

“Gilbertson is primed to be a national contender in the 5000 meters,” said Schroder. “This is something the college has never produced before.”

David Eller (Los Angeles, CA) posted a time of 15:18.80 in the event, finishing first in his group.  John Hurd (Fairview, PA) paced himself for a time of 15:24.62 while Matthew Crichton (Mission Viejo, CA) earned a time of 15:27.99.  Camden McAlister (Saugus, CA) ran the event in 15:38.47, while freshman runners Daniel Eller (Los Angeles, CA) and Ryan Freeman (Highland, CA) followed with impressive times of 15:48.99, and 15:53.58, respectively. Tyler Tockstein (Canyon Country, CA) ended the race with a time of 16:09.02, the sixth-best time in his group.

The Mustangs now look to compete in the Occidental Relays on March 15, in Eagle Rock, California.
