EAGLE ROCK, Calif. – As the 2012 season winds down for The Master’s College distance squad, Saturday’s showing at the Occidental Invitational served the Mustangs well as four members of the Men’s distance team used the meet to continue preparations for the 2012 NAIA National Championships.
First up on the track for the Mustang men was Nathan Seyler in the 1500m run. Showing a strong representation for the Mustangs, Seyler lead the field for the majority of the race but narrowly missed the NAIA National qualifying mark. Nonetheless, Seyler’s effort delivered a new personal best at 3 minutes, and 57.41 seconds. This was Seyler’s final race as a Mustang, as the senior runner will graduate this Friday from The Master’s College. “During his time with the program, Seyler made significant contributions,” Coach Schroeder commented. “He was a part of our first GSAC title, and helped our men’s team to an 11th place finish nationally in 2011. He will be missed.”
Following Seyler was the duo of David Eller and Matthew Crichton in the 3000m steeple chase. In probably the day’s most note-worthy showing for the Mustangs, TMC’s David Eller set a new school record at 9 minutes, and 20.46 seconds. The two men also simultaneously set new personal records with Crichton clocking in at 9 minutes, and 26.20 seconds.
“It’s exciting to be running the best we have all year,” reports Coach Zach Schroeder, “This bodes very well for our performances at Nationals. We have two weeks of sharpening work before we fly out to Marion. This has been a great year for us...I’m excited to see how it all wraps up.”
TMC’s flagship runner John Gilbertson had an off night in the 5000m but is eager to have his revenge on the track come Nationals. TMC’s other standout runner Anthony Pizzo did not race on Saturday. For the next three weeks, Pizzo, Gilbertson, Eller, Crichton, as well as teammates Josiah Downer and Camden McAlister will set their sights and begin training for the NAIA Championships. The meet will take place in Marion, Indiana, from May 25th-26th.
