Vanguard's Kevin Cornwall scored the tie-breaking goal with 13:29 left to play and the Lions went on to beat The Master's College 2-1 in the GSAC opener for both clubs Saturday evening in Costa Mesa. The loss was the 17th-ranked Mustangs' first of the year and dropped them to 7-1-1.
The defending GSAC champion Lions struck first, tallying on a Nikola Ilich free kick at the 24:59 mark of the first half. Ilich's unassisted goal was his third of the year and found the upper left corner of the net.
Nearly 19 minutes later, the Mustangs knotted things up when sophomore Kenny Gardner redirected a free kick and booted in his first goal of the year at the 43:34 mark. The tying shot was assisted by Jorge Serrano and Fabrice Gautrat.
Gardner's tally was the Mustangs' lone shot on goal in the first half and junior goalie Andrew Bussell picked up one save.
The deadlock lasted through halftime and well into the second period until Cornwall's heroics put the Lions ahead to stay.
The Mustangs peppered the Lion defense with seven shots over the final 45 minutes but Lion keeper Cody Adams was up to the task, turning away three shots on goal, including two in the final 10 minutes, to preserve the win.
Winless in their last two starts, the Mustangs will try to do something about that on October 5 when they travel to Santa Barbara to take on Westmont.
