Men’s Soccer Schedule Announced

July 3, 2012

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Master’s College men’s soccer team’s 2012 schedule consists of games against a slimmer Golden State Athletic Conference as Azusa Pacific University, Point Loma University, and Fresno Pacific University have all relocated to the PacWest Conference in NCAA Division II.

And while GSAC newcomer Arizona Christian will add a fresh batch of talent for 22-year head coach Jim Rickard and his Mustangs to be wary of, the 2012 Golden State Athletic Conference title is anyone’s game.

However, a smaller conference doesn’t necessarily equate to lesser competition.

“We start off with two pre-season games that are very difficult where both teams will be treating them like regular season games” said Rickard. “Cal State Bakersfield went to the NCAA Division I playoffs last year and Cal State Los Angeles finished first in their respective conferences. I think we have the players to compete among the best. I need them all to step up against the talent and quality the GSAC produces.”

Coach Rickard and his Mustangs will take to the pitch on August 31st in the home-opener against Whittier on Reese Field. The Mustangs will host four home matches in September and engage in another set of four home games in October.

“This year is going to be a fun year where a lot of people will be playing or have a chance to play. There are years when I have a lot of returners and only a few open spots. But this year with only two returning two seniors, four juniors, and the rest being sophomore and freshman making the team will prove to be a fun year where a lot of players will have the opportunity to make an impact and see some good playing time. Those who are ready to play and perform well will be rewarded for it.”

Losing only six seniors and reloading their roster with talent gleaned throughout a successful off-season, the Mustangs (11-6-3 in 2011, 3-4-2 in the GSAC) are entering the 2012 season with vigor and candor.

Rickard concluded, “I’m excited about our returners and new players, and all the variables that come with our returning sophomores and how they will step up in leadership positions. I need them all to step up and consistently perform at a high level.”
